Gibbston Valley, often called the 'Valley of the Vines,' is Central Otago's original wine-growing region, where the cool climate and schist-rich soils produce some of New Zealand's finest Pinot Noir. Winding along the Kawarau River between Queenstown and Cromwell, this narrow valley is speckled with cellar doors, historic gold-mining relics, and dramatic river gorges. It's a place to slow down, savour a glass, and soak in the rugged beauty.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full day to explore Gibbston Valley properly. Start mid-morning with a tasting at two or three cellar doors, pause for lunch at a vineyard restaurant, then spend the afternoon cycling a section of the Gibbston River Trail or visiting the Kawarau Gorge. If you're a keen wine enthusiast, a second half-day lets you visit the smaller, off-the-beaten-path wineries without rushing.
