Central Otago

Central Otago is a land of stark beauty, where rugged mountains, deep river gorges, and vast schist rock formations are punctuated by historic gold-mining towns and world-class vineyards. This is New Zealand's only continental climate region, bringing hot, dry summers and crisp, cold winters – perfect for pinot noir and stone fruit. The region's pioneering spirit is palpable in its preserved heritage buildings and the ever-present sense of adventure.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give Central Otago at least three to four days to do it justice. Base yourself in Cromwell or Alexandra for easy access to wineries and the rail trail. A day each for the Cromwell area, the rail trail (or a section of it), and a wine-tasting loop through Bannockburn and Gibbston allows a relaxed pace. Add an extra day if you want to hike in the Pisa Range or explore further afield to St. Bathans.
