Flowing from Lake Wanaka to the Pacific, the Clutha River carves through some of Central Otago's most dramatic landscapes, and its banks are lined with world-class vineyards. This is New Zealand's southernmost wine region, renowned for pinot noir, and a drive along the Clutha offers a perfect blend of scenic beauty and cellar-door experiences. The river's terraces and schist soils create ideal conditions for cool-climate grapes, and the wineries here are as welcoming as they are accomplished.
Highlights & What to See
- Rippon Vineyard – Perched above Lake Wanaka, this iconic winery offers breathtaking views across the water to the mountains. Their organic pinot noirs and rieslings are superb, and the tasting room feels like a gallery.
- Mt Difficulty Wines – Overlooking the Cromwell Basin, this estate produces benchmark pinot noir. The cellar door and restaurant have a sweeping panorama of the river and surrounding vineyards.
- Felton Road – A biodynamic star in Bannockburn, famous for its intense, elegant pinot noirs and chardonnays. Book ahead for a tasting of their single-vineyard wines.
- Carrick Winery – Set on the banks of the Clutha, Carrick offers excellent pinot noir and a lovely outdoor terrace. Their food platters pair perfectly with the views.
- Gibbston Valley Winery – Just east of Queenstown, this is one of the region's pioneers. Take a tour of the wine cave and sample their award-winning pinot gris.
- Peregrine Wines – Architecturally striking with its falcon-inspired building, Peregrine produces refined pinot noir and sauvignon blanc. The tasting experience is top-notch.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least two days to explore the Clutha River wineries properly. Base yourself in Queenstown or Wanaka and dedicate each day to a different stretch: the Gibbston Valley and Arrowtown area on one day, and the Cromwell-Bannockburn region on another. This allows for leisurely tastings, lunch at a vineyard restaurant, and time to soak in the landscapes. If you have a third day, venture further south to Alexandra and Roxburgh for more boutique cellar doors.
