Stretching inland from the coast between Oamaru and Omarama, the Waitaki Valley is a sun-scorched landscape of braided rivers, limestone bluffs, and world-class wineries. This is New Zealand's most exciting wine region outside Marlborough, celebrated for its aromatic pinot gris, riesling, and pinot noir. The valley also harbors Māori rock art, hydroelectric lakes, and a sense of quiet vastness that makes it a perfect detour on the drive between Christchurch and Queenstown.
Highlights & What to See
- Waitaki Wineries – Taste cool-climate wines at cellar doors like Ostler, Valli, and Pasquale, many with mountain views.
- Oamaru's Victorian Precinct – Explore limestone buildings, craft breweries, and the famous blue penguin colony at dusk.
- Māori Rock Art at Takiroa – View ancient ochre drawings in limestone shelters, just off SH83.
- Waitaki Dam – One of the country's largest hydro dams; walk across its crest for panoramic river views.
- Vanished World Centre – A quirky museum in Duntroon showcasing fossil whales and penguins from the valley's ancient seabed.
- Elephant Rocks & Anatini – Eroded limestone formations perfect for a picnic or photography.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two days is ideal: spend one day exploring the lower valley from Oamaru to Duntroon, and a second day touring wineries and the upper valley toward Omarama. If you're driving the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, allow three days to pedal the section through the valley, stopping at farm stays and vineyards along the way.
