Twizel is a small town in the Mackenzie Basin, a gateway to the stunning Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and the southern end of the Waitaki Hydro Lakes. Originally a hydroelectricity construction town, it now serves as a peaceful base for exploring the region's alpine scenery, turquoise lakes, and dark sky reserves. With its relaxed vibe and easy access to outdoor adventures, Twizel offers a genuine slice of New Zealand's high country.
Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 nights in Twizel. A full day allows time to explore Lake Pukaki, do a short walk or cycle, and visit a salmon farm. If you're heading into Aoraki/Mount Cook Village (just 45 minutes away), base yourself here for at least two nights to enjoy both areas without rushing. In summer, add an extra day for kayaking or hiking; in winter, a day on the slopes at Ohau is a must.
