Just south of Dunedin, Tunnel Beach is a dramatic slice of Otago coastline where a hand-carved tunnel leads you down to a secluded, wave-battered cove. The name comes from the tunnel, blasted through sandstone cliffs in the 1870s by a local landowner to create a private beach for his family. Today it's a short, steep walk that rewards with towering sea stacks, blowholes, and the raw power of the Southern Ocean. The golden hour light on the sandstone is nothing short of spectacular.
Highlights & What to See
- Walk the Tunnel Beach Track – a 1.5 km return walk (moderate grade, steep in parts) from the carpark to the tunnel and beach. The tunnel itself is narrow and dark, so bring a torch.
- Sea Arch and Sandstone Cliffs – The eroded headland forms a natural arch and honeycombed cliffs; best viewed from the platform at the tunnel entrance.
- Blowholes – On a rough sea, water explodes through holes in the rock – stand well back and keep your camera ready.
- Fossil Hunting – The sandstone contains marine fossils; keep your eyes peeled for shells and impressions.
- Sunset Photography – The warm light on the golden stone and the wild surf makes for unforgettable images.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for the walk and exploration. The track is short but steep, and you'll want time to sit on the beach or watch the waves. Visit at low tide for the best beach access and to see more of the rock formations. Combine with a morning or afternoon in Dunedin city.
