Tasman Glacier

Stretching 27 kilometres down the flanks of Aoraki/Mount Cook, Tasman Glacier is New Zealand's longest and most accessible glacier. Unlike its more famous neighbour the Franz Josef, this massive river of ice is best appreciated from a boat or kayak, paddling among icebergs that calve into the milky turquoise terminal lake. The scale is staggering, and the constant crack and groan of shifting ice makes it feel alive.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate a half-day for a boat tour or kayak trip (typically 2–3 hours on the water). If you're short on time, the viewpoint walk takes just 30 minutes return. Most visitors spend a full day in the Aoraki/Mount Cook area, combining the glacier with other nearby walks and the visitor centre. Plan to arrive early in the morning for the calmest lake conditions and best light.
