Stretching 27 kilometres down the flanks of Aoraki/Mount Cook, Tasman Glacier is New Zealand's longest and most accessible glacier. Unlike its more famous neighbour the Franz Josef, this massive river of ice is best appreciated from a boat or kayak, paddling among icebergs that calve into the milky turquoise terminal lake. The scale is staggering, and the constant crack and groan of shifting ice makes it feel alive.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier boat tours – Cruise right up to the terminal face, weaving between icebergs in the terminal lake; keep an eye out for seals resting on ice floes.
- Kayaking among icebergs – A quieter, more intimate way to experience the glacier; guided trips provide safety and local knowledge.
- Tasman Glacier View track – A short (30-minute) walk from the car park to a viewpoint overlooking the lake and glacier; perfect for a quick overview.
- Heli-hiking – Land on the glacier itself for a guided walk across crevasses and ice formations; book in advance during peak season.
- Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park – The glacier is part of this UNESCO World Heritage site; combine with other short walks like the Hooker Valley Track for alpine meadows and mountain views.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate a half-day for a boat tour or kayak trip (typically 2–3 hours on the water). If you're short on time, the viewpoint walk takes just 30 minutes return. Most visitors spend a full day in the Aoraki/Mount Cook area, combining the glacier with other nearby walks and the visitor centre. Plan to arrive early in the morning for the calmest lake conditions and best light.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Aoraki/Mount Cook Village – Base for accommodation and dining, 30 minutes' drive from the glacier car park.
- Hooker Valley Track – Iconic alpine walk with swing bridges and views of Mount Cook; 3 hours return from the village.
- Lake Pukaki – Stunning turquoise lake with views of Aoraki; stop at the lookout on the way in.
- Twizel – A small town 45 minutes south with good cafés and the salmon farm at High Country Salmon.
- Tekapo – Famous for the Church of the Good Shepherd and dark-sky stargazing; 1 hour south.
