Roys Peak Track
Roys Peak Track is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering jaw-dropping panoramic views of Lake Wānaka and the Southern Alps. This steep but rewarding climb takes you through golden tussock grasslands to a dramatic ridgeline summit at 1,578 metres. The track is a rite of passage for outdoor enthusiasts visiting the Otago region, with the Instagram-famous viewpoint near the top drawing hikers from around the globe. Best tackled in clear weather, the trail is a perfect blend of physical challenge and spectacular scenery.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Views: The 360-degree panorama from the top encompasses Lake Wānaka, the Clutha River, and the jagged peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park.
- Tussock-Covered Slopes: The hike traverses classic Central Otago high-country terrain, with golden tussock contrasting against deep blue skies.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for native birds like the South Island robin and, in summer, the alpine kea (mountain parrot).
- Sunrise or Sunset Hikes: For a truly magical experience, start before dawn to catch the sunrise from the ridge, or hike late afternoon for golden light and fewer crowds.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full half-day for the return hike: most fit walkers complete the 16 km return track in 5–6 hours, including time for photos and a snack at the summit. Start early (by 7 am) to avoid the midday heat and afternoon winds, and to secure parking at the trailhead. The track is steep and relentless – expect a 1,200-metre elevation gain – so pace yourself and carry plenty of water.
