Lindis Pass Track

Straddling the border between Otago and Canterbury, the Lindis Pass Track is a high-country tramp that delivers vast, empty landscapes and a profound sense of isolation. This is classic tussock-clad alpine terrain, where golden grasses ripple in the wind and the only sounds are the bleat of sheep and the rush of a distant river. The track follows the Lindis River through a dramatic glacial valley, offering walkers a raw, untamed slice of New Zealand's interior.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full day (6–8 hours) for the return tramp from the car park to the saddle and back. This gives you time to soak in the views, explore side streams, and pause for lunch. For a shorter taste, walk the first 2 km to the Lindis River bridge and back (1–2 hours). The track is best from November to April; in winter, snow can make the route treacherous and requires advanced skills.
