Lindis Pass is a high-altitude crossing on State Highway 8 between the towns of Tarras and Omarama, offering one of New Zealand's most dramatic alpine landscapes. The road crests at 971 metres, where the stark, golden tussock-covered hills stretch to the horizon, often dotted with wild thyme and punctuated by the braided streams of the Lindis River. This is a place for travellers who appreciate raw, open-country beauty and the thrill of a winding mountain drive.
Highlights & What to See
- Scenic Drive: The pass itself is the main attraction. The road twists and climbs through dramatic landscapes, with several pull-offs for photo stops. The golden tussock glows especially beautifully in late afternoon light.
- Lindis Pass Lookout: A short walk from the summit car park leads to a viewpoint with panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. On a clear day, you can see for miles.
- Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for South Island robins, paradise shelducks, and occasionally, the rare black-fronted tern near the river.
- Walking & Hiking: The Lindis Pass Track is a longer tramping route (8–12 hours one way) that follows the historic stock route, but even a short stroll along the flats near the river offers a sense of the remote landscape.
- Stargazing: The pass is far from light pollution, making it a superb spot for night-sky photography and simply soaking in the Milky Way.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers experience Lindis Pass as a scenic drive, spending 30 minutes to an hour including photo stops. If you want to stretch your legs on the short lookout walk, allow 1–2 hours. For serious hikers tackling the Lindis Pass Track, plan a full day. The pass is best enjoyed as part of a journey between Queenstown/Wanaka and the Mackenzie Country, so it's easy to fit into a self-drive itinerary.
