Tarras

In the heart of Central Otago, Tarras is a tiny settlement that punches well above its weight in scenery and solitude. Surrounded by the braided rivers of the Lindis and Clutha, and framed by the jagged peaks of the Dunstan and St Bathans ranges, this is the real Central Otago — dry, golden, and dramatic. The town itself is little more than a pub and a handful of houses, but it’s a perfect base for exploring the region’s gold-mining history, wine country, and epic landscapes.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Tarras itself can be appreciated in a quick stop for a coffee and a photo, but to do justice to the surrounding attractions, plan for a full day. Combine a morning exploring Bendigo and St Bathans with an afternoon cycling a section of the Rail Trail or wine tasting in Bannockburn. If you’re self-driving, Tarras makes a convenient lunch stop between Wanaka and Central Otago’s southern towns.
