Lake Pukaki is the largest of three roughly parallel alpine lakes running north–south along the edge of the Mackenzie Basin on New Zealand's South Island. Its startling milky-turquoise colour, fed by glacial flour from the Tasman and Hooker Glaciers, creates a surreal backdrop for the iconic view of Aoraki/Mount Cook. This is a place where the road feels like a runway into the mountains, and every pull-off offers a postcard-perfect scene.
Highlights & What to See
- Aoraki/Mount Cook Viewpoint: The classic shot — stop at the southern end of the lake for the uninterrupted view of New Zealand's highest peak reflected in the milky water.
- Lake Pukaki Lookout (State Highway 8): Several marked viewpoints along the road offer sweeping panoramas of the lake and the Southern Alps.
- Mount Cook Alpine Salmon Shop: A tiny hut on the lakeshore selling some of the freshest salmon you'll ever taste — grab a fillet or a pack of sashimi for a picnic with a view.
- Glentanner Park Centre: A gateway for helicopter flights, jet boat rides, and scenic flights over Aoraki/Mount Cook and the Tasman Glacier.
- Braided river deltas: The Tasman River flows into the lake's northern end, creating a braided delta that shifts with the seasons — a mesmerising landscape for photographers.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can soak in the lake's beauty in as little as 30 minutes — just enough for a photo stop and a salmon snack. However, to fully appreciate the changing light and mountain moods, plan for 1–2 hours, including a short walk along the lakeshore or a picnic. If you're combining it with a visit to Aoraki/Mount Cook Village (30 minutes north), allocate a half-day to linger at both.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Twizel: A handy town with supermarkets and cafes, plus access to the Ohau Ski Fields in winter.
- Mount Cook National Park: Extensive walking tracks, including the challenging Mueller Hut Route and the family-friendly Tasman Glacier View walk.
- Mackenzie Basin: The vast, tussock-covered basin itself offers a stark beauty, with cycle trails and farmland dotted with sheep stations.
