Forty-three metres above the churning Kawarau River, the Kawarau Bridge Bungy is the world's first commercial bungy jump, a site that launched a global adventure phenomenon in 1988. The historic steel bridge, surrounded by dramatic schist rock faces and vineyards, offers an iconic leap into the void. Even if you're not jumping, the viewing platform buzzes with nervous energy, and you can watch jumpers plunge towards the turquoise water below. The on-site café serves good coffee, and the shop sells commemorative merchandise for those who conquer their fear.
Highlights & What to See
- Take the plunge – The original 43-metre bungy jump, with options to touch the water or stay dry. You can even tandem jump or go at night.
- Watch from the bridge – The free viewing platform gives you a front-row seat to the action, with the dramatic Kawarau Gorge as a backdrop.
- Visit the historic bridge – Built in 1880, the bridge itself is a piece of engineering history, and it's fun to imagine horse-drawn carriages crossing before bungy cords.
- Combine with wine tasting – The surrounding Gibbston Valley is prime Central Otago wine country; many wineries are just a short drive away.
- AJ Hackett Bungy Centre – The base has a small museum with bungy memorabilia, a shop, and a café with river views.
Suggested Time to Spend
If you're jumping, allow 1–2 hours for the experience, including check-in, suiting up, and the jump itself. If you're just spectating, 30–45 minutes is plenty to watch several jumps, grab a coffee, and soak in the atmosphere. It's best visited as a short stop on a day trip from Queenstown (about 20 minutes' drive) or as part of a Gibbston Valley wine tour.
