Nestled at the confluence of the Clutha and Kawarau rivers, Cromwell is a sun-drenched Central Otago town that blends a gold-rush past with a thriving wine and fruit-growing present. The old town, partially submerged by Lake Dunstan when the Clyde Dam was built, has been partly resurrected as a heritage precinct, while the surrounding hills are quilted with vineyards and orchards. Cromwell is the perfect base for exploring Central Otago's wineries and the dramatic landscapes of the Cromwell Gorge.
Highlights & What to See
- Old Cromwell Town – Stroll through the restored historic precinct along the lakefront, with original stone buildings housing galleries, cafés, and artisan shops. The Cromwell Museum offers a glimpse into the gold-mining era.
- Wine Tasting – Cromwell is at the heart of Central Otago's wine region, famous for pinot noir. Visit cellar doors like Mt Difficulty, Carrick, or Felton Road (just south of town) for tastings with stunning vineyard views.
- Lake Dunstan – The man-made lake is perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. The Lake Dunstan Trail, a 55-km cycling and walking track, hugs the shoreline and offers jaw-dropping views of the Cromwell Gorge.
- Goldfields Mining Centre – A living-history site where you can try gold panning and see historic mining machinery in action.
- Cromwell Heritage Trail – A self-guided walk around town that links historic sites, including the old stone courthouse and the former Post Office.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day exploring Cromwell's wineries and the heritage precinct, but if you plan to cycle the Lake Dunstan Trail or linger over tastings, budget two days. Cromwell also works well as a lunch stop between Queenstown and Wanaka or as a base for a few nights to explore the wider Central Otago region.
