Stretching 301 kilometres from the foot of Aoraki Mount Cook to the Pacific coast at Oamaru, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is New Zealand's longest continually running cycle trail. This epic journey takes you through the heart of the Waitaki Valley, past turquoise lakes, salmon farms, limestone cliffs, and the quirky Victorian precinct of Oamaru. Designed for riders of moderate fitness, the trail is mostly off-road and well signposted, offering a unique way to experience the South Island's diverse landscapes.

Suggested Time to Spend
Most riders complete the trail in 4–6 days, cycling 50–80 km per day. This allows time to soak in the scenery, detour to attractions, and enjoy local food stops. Fit cyclists can do it in 3 days, but you'll miss the leisurely pace that makes this trail special. Book accommodation in advance during summer (Dec–Feb), as the trail is popular with both Kiwis and international visitors.
