Waipapa Point, on the wild Catlins coast, is a windswept headland of stark beauty and poignant history. The lonely lighthouse here, built after the 1881 shipwreck of the SS Tararua, stands as a sentinel over crashing surf and a beach littered with driftwood and sea lions. It’s a place to feel the raw power of the Southern Ocean and reflect on the fragility of life.
Highlights & What to See
- Waipapa Point Lighthouse: This historic wooden lighthouse, still operational, offers a photogenic contrast against the wild seascape. Walk the short track to the base for close-up views.
- New Zealand Sea Lions: The beach is a regular haul-out spot for these massive, endangered animals. Keep a respectful distance (at least 20m) and never get between a sea lion and the water.
- Shipwreck History: A memorial plaque at the point commemorates the 131 lives lost in the SS Tararua wreck. The story adds a somber layer to the visit.
- Scenic Walks: A short loop walk (about 20 minutes) from the carpark leads to the lighthouse and along the clifftop, offering sweeping views of the coastline.
- Wildlife Watching: Besides sea lions, look for fur seals, penguins (especially yellow-eyed penguins at dusk), and seabirds like albatrosses and shags.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours at Waipapa Point. This allows time to walk to the lighthouse, explore the beach (checking for sea lions from a safe distance), and soak in the atmosphere. The light is best in late afternoon, and you might catch a dramatic sunset. It’s a quick stop on a Catlins road trip, but don’t rush it—the point deserves quiet contemplation.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Nugget Point / Tautuku: Another iconic lighthouse and wildlife spot, about 45 minutes north, with a stunning walking track and a colony of sea lions and seals.
- Cathedral Caves: On the same coast, these massive sea caves are accessible at low tide (check times). A 30-minute walk through native forest leads to the entrance.
- McLean Falls: A beautiful waterfall in the Catlins, a short walk from the road, about 30 minutes north of Waipapa Point.
- Curio Bay: Famous for its petrified forest and a yellow-eyed penguin colony. Drive 30 minutes south to see ancient tree fossils and possibly the world’s rarest penguin.
- Invercargill: The nearest city, an hour west, offers provisions, accommodation, and the Southland Museum & Art Gallery.
