Gliding across the deep blue waters of Lake Wakatipu, the TSS Earnslaw is a century-old steamship that offers a nostalgic journey back in time. Known as the 'Lady of the Lake', this vintage coal-fired steamer has been plying the lake since 1912, and a ride aboard her is a quintessential Otago experience. You'll feel the thrum of the engines and smell the coal smoke as you take in the panoramic views of the Remarkables and the surrounding mountains.
Highlights & What to See
- Steamship Cruise: The main draw is the 1.5-hour scenic cruise across Lake Wakatipu, with commentary on the region's history and geology.
- Engine Room Tour: Head below deck to see the original steam engines in action; the engineers are happy to explain how the ship works.
- Walter Peak High Country Farm: Many cruises include a stop at this working farm, where you can watch sheep shearing, enjoy a farm tour, and indulge in an afternoon tea.
- Historic Interiors: Admire the polished wood, brass fittings, and vintage photographs that evoke the ship's Edwardian elegance.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day on the TSS Earnslaw experience, especially if combining the cruise with a visit to Walter Peak Farm. The round-trip cruise alone takes about 1.5 hours, but plan for 3–4 hours if you add the farm tour and afternoon tea. Book your tickets in advance during peak summer months, as the ship is popular.
