Te Anau is the gateway to Fiordland National Park and the starting point for most journeys to Milford Sound. This small lakeside town sits on the shores of Lake Te Anau, New Zealand's second-largest lake, and offers a relaxed atmosphere with stunning mountain views. It's a perfect base for exploring the fiords, hiking the famous Milford and Kepler Tracks, or simply enjoying the tranquil beauty of the South Island's wilderness.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake Te Anau & Lakefront Walk: Stroll or cycle along the lakefront for panoramic views of the Murchison Mountains and the lake's pristine waters. The walk is especially beautiful at sunset.
- Te Anau Glowworm Caves: Take a cruise across the lake to explore these limestone caves, home to thousands of glowworms. The guided tour includes a boat ride through the dark cave system.
- Milford Sound Cruise: A day trip from Te Anau to Milford Sound is a must. The drive itself is spectacular, and the cruise takes you past towering cliffs, waterfalls, and wildlife like seals and dolphins.
- Kepler Track: One of New Zealand's Great Walks, this 60 km circuit offers diverse landscapes from beech forests to alpine ridges. Day hikes like the Kepler Water Taxi option are also popular.
- Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre: Learn about the region's natural and cultural history through interactive exhibits. The centre also provides track and weather updates.
- Te Anau Bird Sanctuary: A conservation project focused on protecting the endangered takahē. You can see these rare birds up close in a natural setting.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2-3 nights in Te Anau. One full day is ideal for a Milford Sound cruise (allow 8-10 hours including travel). Another day can be dedicated to a shorter walk on the Kepler Track or a visit to the glowworm caves. If you're planning to hike the full Kepler Track, allocate 3-4 days. Te Anau itself is compact and can be explored in a few hours.
