Rising steeply above the gold-rush town of Arrowtown, Signal Hill offers a short but rewarding walk that rewards with dizzying views over the Wakatipu Basin. The track climbs through golden tussock and rocky outcrops, passing remnants of Arrowtown's mining history before opening onto a panorama that stretches from Lake Hayes to the jagged peaks of The Remarkables. It's a classic half-hour leg-stretcher that feels a world away from the heritage streets below.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit panorama – The 360-degree view from the top is the main draw: Arrowtown sprawled below, the Shotover River snaking through the valley, and a full alpine backdrop that changes colour with the light.
- Historic mining relics – Look out for old water races, sluicing channels and mullock heaps along the trail – tangible echoes of the 1860s gold rush that put Arrowtown on the map.
- Abandoned miners' hut – A short detour from the main track leads to a tiny, roofless stone hut, a poignant reminder of the solitary lives of early prospectors.
- Wildflowers in spring – From October to December, the hillside erupts in a carpet of yellow broom and purple heather, adding a splash of colour to the already scenic climb.
- Sunset vantage – Locals know this is one of the best spots in the area for golden hour photography, with the sun dipping behind the mountains and the valley bathed in warm light.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself about 1 hour for the return walk from the base of the hill, plus extra time to linger at the summit and explore the historic relics. The track is well-formed but steep in sections, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water. It's best done in the late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds – you can easily combine it with a stroll through Arrowtown's main street and a coffee at one of the village cafés.
