Flanked by the jagged peaks of the Crown Range and the braided channels of the Arrow River, the Arrowtown Wine Trail is a relaxed self-guided loop through some of Central Otago's most celebrated boutique vineyards. Unlike the sprawling estates of Gibbston or Bannockburn, this trail feels intimate and personal—each cellar door is a family affair, where winemakers often pour the wines themselves and share stories of the region's gold-rush origins. The cool-climate pinot noirs here are benchmark expressions of the region: structured, fragrant, and surprisingly approachable. Even if you're not a wine buff, the landscapes alone—golden hills, ancient schist outcrops, and rows of gnarled vines—make this a quintessential Central Otago experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Amisfield Winery & Bistro – A striking stone-and-glass cellar door with a celebrated bistro serving seasonal, garden-to-plate lunches. Try the 'Pungent' Pinot Noir or the RKV Reserve.
- Mt Difficulty Wines – Perched on a rocky promontory above the Kawarau River, this iconic winery offers panoramic views and a refined tasting room. Their Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris are benchmarks.
- Gibbston Valley Winery & Cheese – Just off the trail, this pioneering estate features a cave tour and a cheesery where you can pair local cheeses with their award-winning wines.
- Peregrine Wines – Named after the falcons that nest in the nearby cliffs, this sleek winery is known for its elegant pinots and a striking, wing-shaped building.
- Carrick Wines – A family-run organic vineyard with a warm, rustic cellar door. Their Central Otago Pinot Noir is a standout, and the views over Lake Dunstan are superb.
- Historic Arrowtown Village – Start or end your trail by wandering the gold-rush-era streets of Arrowtown, with its Chinese settlement, old miners' cottages, and excellent cafés.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a full day (6–8 hours) exploring 4–6 wineries at a relaxed pace, with a long lunch at one of the bistro-style cellar doors. If you're short on time, you can focus on the three or four closest to Arrowtown in a half-day (3–4 hours). The trail is best driven, though some sections are bikeable for keen cyclists. Aim to start by 10am to avoid the midday crowds, and book tastings at popular spots like Amisfield and Mt Difficulty in advance during peak season (Nov–Mar).
