Sandfly Bay is a stunning, wild beach on the Otago Peninsula, just a short drive from Dunedin. Despite its off-putting name, this golden sand beach is a haven for wildlife and offers a true taste of New Zealand's rugged coastal beauty. The bay is famous for its colony of New Zealand sea lions, yellow-eyed penguins, and a variety of seabirds. The walk to the beach is an adventure in itself, with steep sand dunes and a track through native bush. It's a must-visit for nature lovers and photographers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for at least 2–3 hours to fully enjoy Sandfly Bay. The walk from the car park takes about 20 minutes down a steep track and across the sand dunes. Spend time on the beach watching the sea lions and birds, and if you're hoping to see penguins, aim to arrive about an hour before sunset. Combine with other stops on the Otago Peninsula for a full day of exploration.
