Roys Peak is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a jaw-dropping panorama of Lake Wanaka, the Southern Alps, and the braided Matukituki River valley. This steep but rewarding trail climbs through tussock-covered slopes to a rocky summit at 1,578 m, where the view is pure alpine drama. The track is well-formed but relentlessly uphill, so come prepared with sturdy boots, layers, and plenty of water. Most hikers start early to beat the midday sun and crowds, and the payoff — a classic Instagram shot from the famous ridgeline — is worth every step.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit panorama: The 360-degree view from the top takes in Lake Wanaka, the Southern Alps, and the Matukituki Valley. On a clear day, you can see as far as Mount Aspiring.
- Alpine flora and birdlife: Look for mountain daisies, snow tussocks, and kea — the cheeky alpine parrots that often investigate hikers at the summit.
- Photography from the ridge: The classic shot of the ridgeline dropping into the lake is best captured early morning or late afternoon when the light is golden.
- Sunrise or sunset hike: For a quieter experience, tackle the trail at dawn or dusk — the colours over the lake are unforgettable.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full half-day: the 16 km return hike typically takes 5–7 hours, depending on fitness and how often you stop for photos. Most people start by 7–8 am to finish by early afternoon. If you're not an experienced hiker, allow extra time for the steep ascent and descent. The trail is best done from November to April; in winter, snow and ice make it a serious mountaineering route requiring crampons and experience.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka: Just a 10-minute drive from the trailhead, this lakeside town is perfect for refuelling with coffee and a meal, or exploring the shops and galleries.
- Arrowtown: A 45-minute drive south, this historic gold-mining settlement offers charming streets, a Chinese settlement, and excellent biking trails.
- Queenstown: About 1 hour away, the adventure capital has bungee jumping, jet boats, and a vibrant food scene — ideal for a multi-day trip.
- Mount Aspiring National Park: For more alpine hiking, head into the park for the Rob Roy Glacier Track or the more challenging Cascade Saddle.
