Roys Peak is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a jaw-dropping panorama of Lake Wanaka, the Southern Alps, and the braided Matukituki River valley. This steep but rewarding trail climbs through tussock-covered slopes to a rocky summit at 1,578 m, where the view is pure alpine drama. The track is well-formed but relentlessly uphill, so come prepared with sturdy boots, layers, and plenty of water. Most hikers start early to beat the midday sun and crowds, and the payoff — a classic Instagram shot from the famous ridgeline — is worth every step.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for a full half-day: the 16 km return hike typically takes 5–7 hours, depending on fitness and how often you stop for photos. Most people start by 7–8 am to finish by early afternoon. If you're not an experienced hiker, allow extra time for the steep ascent and descent. The trail is best done from November to April; in winter, snow and ice make it a serious mountaineering route requiring crampons and experience.
