Roys Peak Track
Roys Peak Track is one of New Zealand's most iconic day hikes, offering a challenging climb that rewards you with one of the most photographed views in the country: a sweeping panorama of Lake Wanaka, the Southern Alps, and the braided Matukituki River. This well-formed trail climbs steadily through tussock-covered slopes, and while the 16 km return journey is steep, the sense of achievement at the summit is immense. The track is best tackled in clear weather, as the views are the entire point — and they’re utterly breathtaking.
Highlights & What to See
- The Summit Viewpoint – The classic Instagram-worthy shot: turquoise Lake Wanaka framed by snow-capped peaks. It’s even better in person.
- Alpine Wildflowers – In spring and summer, the lower slopes are dotted with mountain daisies, buttercups, and other native blooms.
- Wildlife Spotting – Keep an eye out for New Zealand falcons (kārearea) soaring overhead or cheeky kea near the car park.
- Golden Hour Light – Start early for sunrise or late afternoon for golden light that paints the mountains in warm hues.
- Wanaka Town – Not on the track, but the lakeside town is the perfect base for pre- or post-hike coffee and a well-earned meal.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers need 5–6 hours return, though fit walkers can do it in 4 hours. Plan for a full half-day, including time at the top for photos and a snack. Start early to avoid the midday sun and afternoon cloud build-up, which can obscure the views. The track is steep and relentless, so allow extra time if you’re not used to sustained climbs.
