Penguin Place is a conservation reserve on the Otago Peninsula dedicated to protecting the world's rarest mainland penguin colony, the yellow-eyed penguin (hoiho). A visit here offers a rare, intimate glimpse into the lives of these shy birds while supporting vital conservation work. The experience is both educational and moving, with guided tours through pristine coastal habitats.
Highlights & What to See
- Guided Penguin Viewing: Expert-led walks through the reserve's private beaches and native bush, using purpose-built hides and tunnels for close-up, non-intrusive observation of yellow-eyed penguins returning from sea.
- Conservation Centre: Interactive displays explaining the threats penguins face (predators, fishing nets, habitat loss) and the rehabilitation work done here, including the penguin hospital.
- Coastal Scenery: Dramatic cliffs, windswept beaches, and the wild Otago Peninsula coastline – a photographer's dream even when penguins are elusive.
- Seabird & Fur Seal Spotting: Keep an eye out for little blue penguins, royal spoonbills, and New Zealand fur seals hauled out on the rocks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate 1.5–2 hours for the guided tour, which covers the main viewing areas and conservation talk. Arrive in the late afternoon (around 3:30–4:30 pm) for the best chance to see penguins returning from the sea – the timing shifts with seasons. Combine with a morning or afternoon exploring the wider Otago Peninsula (see below) for a full day out.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
