Okarito is a tiny, untamed coastal settlement on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, where the Southern Alps meet the Tasman Sea. This is a place of wild beauty — a long, driftwood-strewn beach, a vast tidal lagoon, and a sky so big it feels like you can see the curve of the earth. The silence here is profound, broken only by the crash of waves and the call of birds. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, breathe deep, and feel very small in the best possible way.
Highlights & What to See
- Okarito Lagoon – New Zealand’s largest unmodified wetland, a pristine ecosystem you can explore by kayak or on a guided boat tour. Paddle silently among white herons (kotuku) and royal spoonbills in one of the country’s most important bird sanctuaries.
- Okarito Beach – A wild, windswept stretch of sand perfect for long walks. Look for the remains of old gold-mining dredges and keep an eye out for Hector’s dolphins surfing the waves.
- Okarito Trig Walk – A steep but short hike (about 1.5 hours return) through lush rainforest to a lookout that offers a jaw-dropping panorama of the lagoon, the Southern Alps, and on a clear day, Aoraki / Mount Cook.
- White Heron Sanctuary Tour – The only accessible white heron (kotuku) breeding colony in New Zealand. A guided boat trip across the lagoon takes you to a viewing hide where you can watch these elegant birds at close range (seasonal: September to January).
- Okarito Kiwi Tours – Join a nocturnal guided walk to hear the call of the Okarito brown kiwi (rowi), one of the rarest kiwi species, which thrives in this predator-controlled sanctuary.
Suggested Time to Spend
Okarito is a half-day to full-day detour from Franz Josef or Whataroa. Most visitors spend 2–4 hours: kayak the lagoon in the morning, do the Trig Walk in the afternoon, and watch sunset over the beach. If you’re a birding enthusiast or want to do the kiwi tour, plan for an overnight stay — there’s a handful of charming lodges and a historic pub with basic accommodation.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Franz Josef Glacier – 30 minutes north, you can walk to the terminal face or take a heli-hike onto the ice.
- Whataroa – The gateway to the White Heron Sanctuary and a good spot for jet-boat tours on the Whataroa River.
- Lake Mapourika – A stunning mirror lake just north of Franz Josef, perfect for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding with mountain reflections.
- Fox Glacier – An hour south, with its own walks, heli-hikes, and the nearby Lake Matheson for classic reflection shots of Aoraki.
