Plummeting 134 metres into a narrow gorge, the Nevis Bungy is New Zealand's highest bungy jump and one of the most adrenaline-charged experiences on the planet. Suspended from a tiny cable car that shuttles you over the chasm, you'll be strapped in and given the nod – then it's just you, the wind, and a heart-stopping freefall that feels like it lasts an eternity. The setting is spectacular: the craggy Nevis River winds far below, and the surrounding mountains rise in silent witness. This is a rite of passage for thrill-seekers visiting Queenstown, and the bragging rights are immense.
Highlights & What to See
- The Jump Itself: The main event – a 134-metre leap into the Nevis Gorge. You'll freefall for 8.5 seconds before the cord catches, then bounce and swing above the river.
- Nevis Catapult: For an extra dose of adrenaline, try the neighbouring Nevis Catapult, which fires you 150 metres across the canyon in just 1.5 seconds.
- Scenic Shuttle Ride: The journey to the jump platform is an adventure in itself, with a 4WD ride across rugged terrain followed by a cable-car transfer high above the gorge.
- Spectacular Canyon Views: Even if you're not jumping, the viewing platform offers jaw-dropping perspectives of the Nevis River and the dramatic landscape.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a half-day experience. The entire trip from Queenstown (including transport, safety briefing, and the jump itself) takes about 3–4 hours. If you're also doing the Catapult, add another hour. Most people book a morning or afternoon slot and combine it with a leisurely lunch in Arrowtown or Gibbston Valley.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Arrowtown: A historic gold-mining town 20 minutes away, with charming streets, boutique shops, and excellent cafes for post-jump recovery.
- Gibbston Valley: Known as the 'Valley of the Vines', it's a short drive and offers wine tastings, cellar doors, and the Gibbston Valley Cheese shop.
- Queenstown: The adventure capital of New Zealand, with endless dining, shopping, and outdoor activities – just 40 minutes from the Nevis site.
- Kawarau Gorge: Home to the original bungy site and the Kawarau Suspension Bridge, plus jet boat rides and the Kawarau River.
- Lake Hayes: A peaceful lake with a scenic walking track, perfect for a relaxing afternoon after the adrenaline rush.
