Millers Flat is a sleepy, sun-baked settlement on the Clutha River that feels like a forgotten chapter of Otago's gold-rush story. The surrounding landscape—golden tussock hills, deep river gorges, and lonely stands of willow—has a raw, melancholic beauty. It's the kind of place you stumble upon while tracing the old gold trails, where the only sounds are the river's rush and the wind in the poplars.
Highlights & What to See
- Clutha River/Mata-Au – The mighty river here is broad and powerful, perfect for a contemplative picnic or a short walk along its banks. Look for the remains of old gold dredges half-submerged in the shallows.
- Millers Flat Bridge – The historic single-lane suspension bridge is the settlement's enduring landmark. Walk across it for views up and down the gorge, and imagine the miners who once crossed here.
- Gabriel's Gully – About 20 minutes' drive away, this is where the Otago gold rush began in 1861. The historic reserve has walking trails, a recreated Chinese settlement, and the dramatic open-cast mine scar.
- Lake Roxburgh – A short drive south, this hydro lake offers fishing (brown trout), kayaking, and a scenic picnic spot with a playground. The Roxburgh Gorge Trail starts here.
- Teviot Valley Wine Trail – The region around Millers Flat is emerging for its cool-climate pinot noir and aromatic whites. Several cellar doors are within a 15-minute drive – ask locally for current openings.
Suggested Time to Spend
Millers Flat itself is a brief stop – 30 minutes to an hour is enough to walk the bridge, stretch your legs by the river, and grab a coffee from the tiny general store. However, it's best treated as a base for a half-day exploration of the Teviot Valley's gold-rush sites and wineries. Most visitors pass through on the way from Roxburgh to Alexandra, so factor in a couple of hours to detour to Gabriel's Gully and taste a few wines.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Roxburgh – 15 minutes south: a proper small town with a supermarket, cafés, and the famous Roxburgh fruit-growing area. Great for stocking up on summer stone fruit.
- Alexandra – 30 minutes north: the service hub of Central Otago, with the striking Clock Tower, the Manuherikia River walkway, and excellent bike trails.
- Gabriel's Gully Historic Reserve – The birthplace of the Otago gold rush, with a well-preserved Chinese settlement and a short bush walk to the tailings.
- Lake Roxburgh Village – A tiny lakeside settlement with a boat ramp and a peaceful camping ground – perfect for an overnight stop if you're fishing or kayaking.
- Waikaia Bush Road – A scenic gravel route that winds through native forest and tussock farmland, connecting to the old Waikaia goldfields. Only for confident drivers in dry conditions.
