Plunging 22 metres into a deep, mossy gorge, Mclean Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Catlins. The walk to the falls winds through lush native forest alive with birdlife, leading you to a series of tiered cascades that thunder into a crystal-clear pool. It's a short, rewarding hike that immerses you in the raw beauty of New Zealand's southern wilderness.
Highlights & What to See
- The main cascade: A powerful curtain of water dropping into a dark pool, often veiled in mist and rainbows on sunny days.
- Native forest trail: The 40-minute return walk passes through rimu, beech and ferns, with chances to spot kererū (wood pigeon) and tūī.
- Lower viewpoints: Several platforms offer different angles of the falls and the gorge below.
- Interpretive signs: Learn about the local ecology and the area's Māori history along the track.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–1.5 hours for the return walk and time to soak in the views. The track is well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels. Visit in the morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds. Combine with other Catlins highlights like the Cathedral Caves or Nugget Point for a full day of exploration.
