Makarora is a tiny settlement at the northern tip of Lake Wanaka, where the Makarora River meets the lake, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park. It's a gateway to some of New Zealand's most pristine wilderness, offering a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience for those driving between Wanaka and the West Coast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers pass through Makarora in an hour or two to do the Blue Pools Track and stretch their legs. To fully appreciate the area, consider an overnight stay – this allows time for a longer hike like the Rob Roy Glacier Track (half-day) or a farm tour. It's a perfect stopover on the WanakaHaast Pass route, breaking up the drive.
