Lord of the Rings Locations
Just a short drive from Arrowtown, the surrounding hills and rivers served as key filming locations for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. The braided rivers and golden tussock grasslands here doubled as the Gladden Fields and parts of the Anduin River. Even if you're not a die-hard fan, the landscapes are stunning – wild, empty, and epic. A guided tour will point out the exact spots where scenes were shot, but you can also explore on a self-drive trip with a map from the Arrowtown visitor centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Arrow River – The river itself was used for the Gladden Fields scenes, where Isildur was killed and the One Ring was lost. Try a riverside walk and imagine the Ring slipping into the water.
- Gibston Valley – The Kawarau Gorge and surrounding vineyards were used for the approach to the Ford of Bruinen. The landscape is dramatic, with steep cliffs and rushing water.
- Queenstown Hill – From the top, you can see the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu, which were used as backdrops for the Misty Mountains and the journey south of Rivendell.
- Bidgood's Pub (Arrowtown) – Not a film set, but a great place to refuel after a day of location-hunting. Its historic stone walls feel straight out of Middle-earth.
- Guided Tours – Several operators run half-day trips from Arrowtown or Queenstown, taking you to multiple filming sites with behind-the-scenes stories.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside at least half a day to visit the key locations around Arrowtown. If you're driving yourself, a 3–4 hour loop with stops at the Arrow River and Gibston Valley is plenty. For a deeper experience, join a guided tour that lasts around 4–5 hours and includes commentary. Combine it with a morning in Arrowtown's historic centre and you've got a full day of Middle-earth magic.
