Kinloch is a tiny, off-grid settlement cradled at the head of Lake Wakatipu, deep in a remote arm of Otago. Reached by a scenic 40-minute drive from Arrowtown along a winding gravel road, this former gold-mining village now feels like a secret hideaway for those seeking absolute quiet and wild nature. The only sounds are the lapping lake, the call of birds, and the crackle of a fire in the lodge. It’s the perfect base for tramping, kayaking, or simply disconnecting from the world.
Highlights & What to See
- Greenstone & Caples Tracks: Two of New Zealand’s Great Walks begin here, offering multi-day tramps through ancient beech forest, alpine meadows, and dramatic river valleys. Even a short day walk along the first few kilometres is rewarding.
- Lake Wakatipu Kayaking: Paddle the pristine, deep-blue waters of the lake from Kinloch’s shore. The reflections of the surrounding mountains are mesmerising, and you might spot a crested grebe or black shag.
- Kinloch Lodge: This historic, lakeside lodge is the heart of the settlement. Pop in for a coffee, a meal made from local produce, or just to soak in the cosy, wood-panelled ambience and chat with the owners.
- Stargazing: With zero light pollution, Kinloch offers some of the darkest skies in the region. On a clear night, the Milky Way arcs overhead in astonishing detail.
- Historic Gold Mining Remains: Scattered along the lakeshore and riverbeds, you’ll find old sluicings, water races, and the remains of miners’ huts – a poignant reminder of the 1860s gold rush.
Suggested Time to Spend
Kinloch is a destination for at least two nights if you want to tramp the Greenstone or Caples tracks. For a day trip from Arrowtown or Queenstown, allow a full day: drive out in the morning, enjoy a short walk and lunch at the lodge, and return by late afternoon. If you’re a keen kayaker or photographer, consider an overnight stay to catch the golden light at dawn and dusk.
