Kawarau Gorge is a dramatic river canyon carved by the Kawarau River between Queenstown and Cromwell. Known for its schist rock walls, turquoise waters, and historic gold-mining legacy, it's a must-stop for scenic drives, bungy jumping, and wine tasting. The gorge is also the gateway to the Gibbston Valley wine region and offers a glimpse into New Zealand's wild, rugged heart.
Highlights & What to See
- AJ Hackett Bungy Centre – The original bungy site at Kawarau Bridge (43m high) lets you leap over the river or just watch the brave. The on-site café is great for a coffee with a view.
- Kawarau Gorge Lookout – Pull over on SH6 for panoramic views of the winding river and sheer rock faces. Perfect for photos.
- Gibbston Valley Wineries – Just west of the gorge, cellar doors like Chard Farm and Peregrine Wines offer tastings of Central Otago pinot noir with stunning cliffside settings.
- Gold-mining history – The gorge was once a bustling goldfield; interpretive signs near the bridge explain the 1860s rush and the Chinese miners' settlements.
- Kawarau River rafting – For adrenaline seekers, jet boat rides and white-water rafting trips operate through the gorge's rapids (Class III–IV).
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 1–2 hours if you're just stopping for photos and the bungy centre, or half a day if you add a winery visit or a short walk. The gorge is a perfect 30-minute detour between Queenstown and Cromwell, and best visited mid-morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds.
