Kawarau Gorge is a dramatic river canyon carved by the Kawarau River between Queenstown and Cromwell. Known for its schist rock walls, turquoise waters, and historic gold-mining legacy, it's a must-stop for scenic drives, bungy jumping, and wine tasting. The gorge is also the gateway to the Gibbston Valley wine region and offers a glimpse into New Zealand's wild, rugged heart.

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan for 1–2 hours if you're just stopping for photos and the bungy centre, or half a day if you add a winery visit or a short walk. The gorge is a perfect 30-minute detour between Queenstown and Cromwell, and best visited mid-morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer crowds.
