Spanning the dramatic Kawarau River, this historic bridge is best known as New Zealand's original bungy jumping site. The 43-metre drop into the turquoise gorge is a rite of passage for adrenaline seekers, but even if you're not jumping, the bridge offers stunning views of the schist cliffs and river below, making it a worthwhile stop on the road between Queenstown and Arrowtown.
Highlights & What to See
- Bungy Jumping: Take the plunge from the historic AJ Hackett Bungy site – the world's first commercial bungy operation. You can touch the water, or go for a full dunk.
- Kawarau River Views: Walk to the bridge's midpoint for spectacular photo ops of the narrow gorge and the electric blue water.
- Observation Platform: Watch other jumpers from the adjacent viewing area – it's heart-pounding entertainment even if you stay dry.
- Nearby Arrowtown: Just a 10-minute drive away, this gold-rush town offers historic streets, boutique shops, and excellent cafes.
- Gibbston Valley Winery: Head 5 minutes east to sample Central Otago's famous pinot noir at cellar doors set among rugged hills.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 30 minutes to an hour if you're just watching or taking photos. If you're bungy jumping, budget 1–2 hours including check-in, gear-up, and the jump itself. The bridge is a quick stop on a day trip from Queenstown (20 minutes west) or Arrowtown.
