The Catlins Coastal Road is a wild, scenic stretch of southeastern New Zealand that feels a world away from the tourist trail. This rugged coastline, with its dense native forest, thunderous waterfalls, and colonies of rare wildlife, offers an intimate encounter with nature at its most raw. Driving this road is an adventure in itself—winding through lush hills, past secluded beaches, and with the constant roar of the Southern Ocean as your soundtrack.
Highlights & What to See
- Nugget Point – A iconic lighthouse perched on a rocky peninsula, home to fur seals, sea lions, and yellow-eyed penguins. The short walk to the viewpoint is a must.
- Purakaunui Falls – A stunning three-tiered waterfall cascading through native bush, easily reached by a short, family-friendly walk.
- Cathedral Caves – Enormous sea caves carved into sandstone cliffs, accessible only at low tide. Check tide times before visiting.
- Curio Bay – A petrified forest and a breeding site for Hector's dolphins and yellow-eyed penguins. In summer, you can spot dolphins surfing the waves.
- McLean Falls – One of the most impressive waterfalls in the region, plunging 22 metres into a deep pool surrounded by lush ferns.
- Slope Point – The southernmost point of the South Island, with dramatic cliffs and twisted trees sculpted by the wind.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allocate at least a full day to drive the Catlins Coastal Road from Balclutha to Invercargill (or vice versa). The road is slow and winding, and you'll want to stop frequently. For a deeper experience, plan two days with an overnight stay in Owaka or Papatowai. This allows you to do short walks, visit the caves at the right tide, and enjoy the beaches without rushing.
