Burkes Pass is a tiny historic settlement tucked into the Mackenzie Basin, where the road crests the low saddle between the Two Thumb and Four Peaks ranges. This is classic high-country New Zealand – golden tussock, big skies, and a palpable sense of isolation. The pass itself is a scenic drive, but the real draw is the beautifully preserved 19th-century village, including the original stone church and the heritage-listed Burkes Pass Hotel. Stop here for a pint and a pie, and you'll feel like you've stepped back in time.
Highlights & What to See
- Burkes Pass Heritage Area – Wander the cluster of original stone and timber buildings, including the 1860s St Patrick's Church, the old schoolhouse, and the blacksmith's shop. Interpretive signs bring the gold-rush and farming history to life.
- Burkes Pass Hotel – This iconic pub has been serving travellers since the 1860s. Pop in for a cold beer, a hearty meal, and a chat with the friendly locals. The historic interior is a museum of memorabilia.
- Scenic Drive over the Pass – The road from Fairlie to Lake Tekapo winds up through dramatic high-country landscapes. Pull over at the summit for panoramic views of the Mackenzie Basin and the Southern Alps.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for New Zealand falcons (kārearea) and, in the tussock, the elusive Mackenzie Basin skink.
- Photography – The golden light at sunrise and sunset paints the tussock and mountains in stunning hues. The old church and hotel make perfect foreground subjects.
Suggested Time to Spend
Burkes Pass is a quick stop – allow 1–2 hours to explore the heritage buildings, have a drink at the hotel, and take in the views. If you're driving between Fairlie and Lake Tekapo, it's an ideal 20-minute detour. For photographers or history buffs, a longer visit of half a day could include a walk on the nearby tussock trails.
