Burkes Pass

Burkes Pass is a tiny historic settlement tucked into the Mackenzie Basin, where the road crests the low saddle between the Two Thumb and Four Peaks ranges. This is classic high-country New Zealand – golden tussock, big skies, and a palpable sense of isolation. The pass itself is a scenic drive, but the real draw is the beautifully preserved 19th-century village, including the original stone church and the heritage-listed Burkes Pass Hotel. Stop here for a pint and a pie, and you'll feel like you've stepped back in time.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Burkes Pass is a quick stop – allow 1–2 hours to explore the heritage buildings, have a drink at the hotel, and take in the views. If you're driving between Fairlie and Lake Tekapo, it's an ideal 20-minute detour. For photographers or history buffs, a longer visit of half a day could include a walk on the nearby tussock trails.
