The Blue Pools of Makarora are a dazzling spectacle of nature, where the sapphire-hued waters of the Makarora River flow through a narrow gorge, creating a series of deep, crystal-clear pools. A short, easy walk through beech forest leads to a swingbridge with panoramic views of the turquoise water below. On a sunny day, the contrast between the vibrant blue and the surrounding greenery is almost surreal, making it a must-stop on the journey between Wanaka and Haast.
Highlights & What to See
- The Suspension Bridge: The main viewing platform – a swingbridge that offers a bird's-eye view of the pools' incredible colour and clarity.
- The Forest Walk: A gentle 1.5 km (30 min) stroll through ancient silver beech and rimu forest, alive with birdlife including fantails and bellbirds.
- Pool Gazing: On calm days, the pools are so clear you can see trout gliding over the rocky bottom – a perfect spot for photography.
- Makarora River: The river itself is a stunning braided system; explore the gravel banks downstream for a different perspective.
- Nearby Lookout: A short side track leads to a rocky outcrop with views up the valley towards the Southern Alps.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the return walk from the carpark, plus extra time to soak in the views and take photos. It's an ideal short stop to stretch your legs on the Haast Pass drive. For a more relaxed visit, combine it with a picnic lunch by the riverbank – the pools are best enjoyed in the late morning when the sun hits the water directly.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Wanaka: 65 km south – a vibrant lakeside town with excellent cafes, galleries, and the famous #ThatWanakaTree.
- Haast Pass: The scenic drive itself is an attraction, with waterfalls, rainforest, and mountain views at every turn.
- Fantail Falls: A 5-minute walk from the highway – a pretty waterfall cascading over schist rock, perfect for a quick photo stop.
- Thunder Creek Falls: Another easy-access waterfall, just a few kilometres further north, with a short track to a viewing platform.
- Makarora Village: A tiny settlement with a general store and café – a good spot for a coffee or ice cream.
