Blue Pools

The Blue Pools of Makarora are a dazzling spectacle of nature, where the sapphire-hued waters of the Makarora River flow through a narrow gorge, creating a series of deep, crystal-clear pools. A short, easy walk through beech forest leads to a swingbridge with panoramic views of the turquoise water below. On a sunny day, the contrast between the vibrant blue and the surrounding greenery is almost surreal, making it a must-stop on the journey between Wanaka and Haast.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the return walk from the carpark, plus extra time to soak in the views and take photos. It's an ideal short stop to stretch your legs on the Haast Pass drive. For a more relaxed visit, combine it with a picnic lunch by the riverbank – the pools are best enjoyed in the late morning when the sun hits the water directly.
