Ben Lomond is the classic Queenstown hike, a steep but rewarding climb that delivers one of the most famous views in New Zealand. The track begins near the Skyline Gondola base and switchbacks up through mountain beech forest before emerging onto the tussock-clad summit ridge. From the 1748-metre peak, you’ll be treated to a jaw-dropping panorama of Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables, Cecil Peak, and the entire Wakatipu Basin. This is a must-do for hikers who want a full-day adventure with a big payoff.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit views: The 360-degree vista from the top is arguably the best in the region, with Lake Wakatipu, The Remarkables, and Cecil Peak laid out before you.
- Alpine tussock and rock: The upper section traverses a rocky, exposed ridgeline with hardy alpine vegetation and the chance to spot kea.
- Ben Lomond Saddle: A good turnaround point if you’re short on time or energy – still offers excellent views of the lake and mountains.
- Skyline Gondola shortcut: You can take the gondola up to reduce the vertical gain, but purists will want to hike from the bottom.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 5 to 7 hours return from the base of the gondola, depending on your fitness. The climb is steep and sustained, so allow extra time for photo stops and lunch at the summit. Many people start early morning to avoid the heat and afternoon clouds. If you’re fit, you can combine it with a ride up the gondola for a shorter day – but the full hike from the bottom is the real experience.
