Ben Lomond Track is a classic Queenstown-area hike that rewards you with one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Otago. Starting from the Ben Lomond Reserve car park or via the gondola from the Skyline complex, this steep, relentless climb ascends through beech forest and tussock slopes to a 1748-metre summit. On a clear day, the vista sweeps across Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, and the surrounding alpine landscape—a true bucket-list experience for hikers.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow a full half-day for the return hike: 3–4 hours up and 2.5–3 hours down, depending on fitness. Most hikers start early morning to avoid afternoon heat and afternoon cloud build-up. If you take the gondola up, you can reduce total time to about 3–4 hours. The track is steep and exposed, so bring plenty of water, sun protection, and warm layers—even in summer.
