Arrow River Gold Panning
Try your hand at gold panning in the Arrow River, just a short stroll from Arrowtown's historic main street. This is where Otago's gold rush kicked off in the 1860s, and you can still find tiny flecks of gold in the gravel. It's a fun, hands-on way to connect with the region's past – you'll quickly understand why miners were so obsessed.
Highlights & What to See
- Gold Panning Experience: Rent a pan from the nearby Arrowtown Gold Centre or Chinese Settlement shop, then head to the riverbanks. The best spots are near the historic Chinese Settlement – look for shallow, slow-moving water. You'll likely find 'colour' (tiny gold flakes) within minutes.
- Arrowtown Chinese Settlement: Explore the restored huts and gardens of the Chinese miners who lived here in the 1800s. It's a poignant glimpse into their tough lives, and the adjacent riverbanks are prime panning territory.
- Arrowtown Heritage Walk: Follow the gold-panning with a stroll past historic buildings like the Lakes District Museum and the old jail. The town's autumn colours (April–May) are spectacular.
- Lake Hayes: A short drive or cycle away, this serene lake offers walking trails, picnicking, and reflections of the surrounding mountains.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours for gold panning – it's easy to lose track of time as you sift through gravel. Combine it with a visit to the Chinese Settlement (30 minutes) and a wander around Arrowtown (1–2 hours) for a half-day outing. If you're keen, make it a full day by adding a hike or a bike ride on the Arrow River Trail.
