Arrow Junction is a tiny settlement at the intersection of the Crown Range Road and State Highway 6, just a few minutes south of Arrowtown. This unassuming crossroads serves as the gateway to some of Central Otago's most dramatic landscapes, with the rugged peaks of the Crown Range rising to the north and the lush Arrow River valley stretching south. It's a place to pause and take in the raw beauty of the region, with a handful of historic buildings and a sense of being on the edge of the wilderness.
Highlights & What to See
- Crown Range Road: Drive one of New Zealand's highest sealed roads, offering jaw-dropping views of the Southern Alps and the Cardrona Valley. The road is a thrill for drivers and cyclists alike, with plenty of lookout points to stop and soak in the scenery.
- Arrow River: Follow the riverbank on foot or by bike along the Arrow River Bridges Trail, a flat, scenic path that links Arrowtown to the junction. In autumn, the poplar and willow trees turn gold, creating a photographer's paradise.
- Historic Gold Mining Sites: Explore remnants of the region's gold rush past, including old sluicings and water races visible from the road. The nearby Arrowtown Chinese Settlement offers a deeper dive into the area's multicultural history.
- Gibbston Valley Wineries: Just a short drive west, the Gibbston Valley is home to some of New Zealand's best pinot noir. Stop for a tasting at Peregrine or Chard Farm, both with stunning vineyard views.
- Lake Hayes: A picturesque lake surrounded by walking and cycling trails, perfect for a picnic or a gentle afternoon stroll. The lake is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset.
Suggested Time to Spend
Arrow Junction itself is a quick stop—30 minutes to an hour is enough to snap photos and stretch your legs. However, the area is best explored as part of a half-day or full-day loop from Queenstown or Arrowtown. Combine a drive over the Crown Range with a visit to the Gibbston Valley wineries, or cycle the Arrow River Bridges Trail and stop for lunch at a local vineyard. If you're keen on hiking, the nearby Ben Lomond Track or Queenstown Hill offer rewarding views but require a full day.
