Northland is where New Zealand’s subtropical soul meets its storied past. This sun-drenched peninsula, stretching north from Auckland to the very tip of the country, is a land of ancient kauri forests, golden beaches that seem to go on forever, and waters so blue they rival the Pacific Islands. It’s here that the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, shaping the nation, and where Māori culture pulses strongly through everyday life. For travellers, Northland delivers a heady mix of laidback coastal charm, rich history, and raw natural beauty — all within easy reach of each other.
Highlights & What to See
- Bay of Islands — a sparkling aquatic playground of 144 islands, perfect for sailing, dolphin-watching, and kayaking. Base yourself in Paihia for harbour cruises and easy access to historic Russell across the bay.
- Waitangi Treaty Grounds — the birthplace of modern New Zealand. Explore the museum, the carved meeting house, and the massive ceremonial waka (war canoe) on this beautifully kept site.
- Cape Reinga & Ninety Mile Beach — drive to the northernmost tip where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific, a place of deep spiritual significance. The beach itself is a legendary highway for 4WD tours and sandboarding.
- Whangārei — the region’s main city, with a vibrant waterfront, the excellent Hundertwasser Art Centre, and the stunning Whangārei Falls just minutes from town.
- Kauri Coast — walk among giants in the Waipoua Forest, home to Tāne Mahuta, the largest known kauri tree in New Zealand. The atmosphere is cathedral-like and humbling.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least 4–5 days to do Northland justice. Spend two days exploring the Bay of Islands (including a day trip to Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach), one day in the Kauri Coast, and one day around Whangārei. If you’re short on time, prioritise the Bay of Islands and Waitangi — they pack the biggest punch. The region is best experienced as a loop from Auckland, allowing you to take in the west coast forests and east coast beaches without backtracking.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Auckland — the natural gateway, just a 3-hour drive south. Combine Northland with a few days in the City of Sails for a perfect North Island start.
- Waikato — head south to the Waikato region for the glowworm-lit Waitomo Caves and the rolling green hills of Hobbiton.
- Coromandel Peninsula — a detour east from Auckland offers hot water beaches, coastal hikes, and laidback beach towns like Whitianga.
- Bay of Plenty — continue south to the sunny Bay of Plenty for white-sand beaches and the active marine reserve of Tauranga.
- Taupō — further inland, Lake Taupō and Tongariro National Park provide volcanic landscapes and world-class trout fishing.
