With more than 140 subtropical islands scattered across a shimmering blue sea, the Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand's most iconic destinations. This historic region is where the first European settlers landed and where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, blending rich Māori and colonial heritage with world-class sailing, dolphin watching, and pristine beaches. The main hub is Paihia, a lively waterfront town with excellent cafes and easy access to the bay's treasures.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Plan at least 2–3 days to experience the Bay of Islands properly. Spend your first day exploring Paihia and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, then take a full-day cruise to the Hole in the Rock and remote islands. On your third day, ferry over to Russell for a dose of history and a beachside lunch. If you have more time, add a day for kayaking, sailing, or a trip to Cape Reinga and Ninety Mile Beach.
