North Canterbury is a sun-drenched region stretching from the braided Waimakariri River north to the Conway River, with the Southern Alps rising to the west. This is a land of rolling hills, vine-clad valleys, and dramatic coastline, where small towns like Waipara, Cheviot, and Hanmer Springs offer a relaxed pace and genuine Kiwi hospitality. The region is famous for its world-class pinot noir and sauvignon blanc, hot springs, and uncrowded beaches, making it a perfect detour between Christchurch and Kaikōura.
Highlights & What to See
- Waipara Valley Wine Region – Taste award-winning pinot noir, riesling, and sauvignon blanc at cellar doors like Pegasus Bay and Mud House. Many have restaurants with vineyard views.
- Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa – Soak in natural hot pools surrounded by forest, then try mountain biking, bungy jumping, or hiking in the nearby forest park.
- Kaikōura – Just north of the region, this coastal town is a must for whale watching, dolphin encounters, and fresh crayfish. The scenic Kaikōura Peninsula Walk offers stunning ocean views.
- Hurunui River & Lake Sumner – Kayak, fish, or hike in this rugged alpine area. The Lake Sumner Track is a multi-day tramp through beech forest.
- Gore Bay – A wild, beautiful beach with dramatic limestone cliffs and a seal colony. Great for a picnic and a walk.
- Cheviot Historical Museum & Markets – Explore the region's Māori and settler history, and visit the Saturday farmers' market for local produce.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to sample the highlights. Spend one day wine tasting in Waipara and exploring the coast, then a second day soaking in Hanmer Springs and doing a short walk. If you're heading north to Kaikōura, add an extra day for wildlife tours. The region is easily done as a stopover on the State Highway 1 route between Christchurch (45 minutes south) and Kaikōura (1.5 hours north).
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
