West Coast Glaciers

On New Zealand's rugged West Coast, the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers descend from the Southern Alps almost to sea level, surrounded by temperate rainforest. The scale is staggering: ancient ice creeps down valleys carved by millennia, and the sound of cracking ice echoes off sheer rock walls. A heli-hike onto the glacier’s surface reveals surreal blue crevasses and ice caves, while the terminal face offers a front-row seat to nature's raw power.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least two full days to experience both glaciers properly. Spend one day on a heli-hike (half-day trip) and the other exploring valley walks, Lake Matheson, and Okarito. If you're short on time, a single day can cover a heli-hike on one glacier plus a quick stop at the other's viewpoint, but you'll miss the region's quieter corners.
