Taylors Mistake is a ruggedly beautiful coastal enclave on the Banks Peninsula, just a 20-minute drive from Christchurch. Named after a 19th-century shipping error, this sheltered bay offers wild surf, dramatic lava cliffs, and a laid-back beach vibe that feels a world away from the city. It's a favourite among locals for its uncrowded sands, excellent walking tracks, and the iconic rock formations that frame the shoreline.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is sufficient to enjoy the beach and do the Godley Head walk (allow 2–3 hours return). If you're keen on surfing or want to linger over fish and chips at the beachside café, plan for a full day. Combine with a morning at Sumner or a drive around the Banks Peninsula for a rewarding day trip from Christchurch.
