New Zealand’s longest glacier, Tasman Glacier, is a breathtaking river of ice that snakes 27 kilometres down from Aoraki Mount Cook. Unlike the steep, crevassed Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, Tasman is a wide, gentle ice flow that ends in the milky-blue Tasman Lake, where you can kayak among icebergs. The scale here is immense – a silent, frozen world that feels like a polar landscape dropped into the Southern Alps.
Highlights & What to See
- Glacier Viewpoint Walk – A short, easy 20-minute walk from the car park leads to a lookout over the terminal lake and the glacier’s snout. Go early morning for calm water and reflections.
- Iceberg Boat Tours – Small boats navigate Tasman Lake, weaving between floating ice chunks. You’ll hear them crack and pop, and may see pieces calve off the glacier.
- Scenic Flights – Helicopter or ski-plane tours land on the glacier’s upper reaches, where the ice is clean and blue. You can walk on the glacier and peer into crevasses.
- Kayaking on Tasman Lake – Paddle among icebergs in a silent, surreal setting. Tours are weather-dependent and run from late spring to early autumn.
- Blue Lakes and Tasman Valley Walk – A longer track (1.5 hours return) that passes vibrant blue tarns and offers wider views of the glacier and surrounding peaks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough for the glacier viewpoint and a boat or kayak trip. If you add a scenic flight, plan for a full day. The best light is in the morning; afternoons can bring wind that ripples the lake. Combine with a visit to Aoraki/Mount Cook Village, just 10 minutes’ drive south.
