Omaru is a charming coastal town on the edge of the Waitaki River, where Victorian architecture meets untamed Pacific beaches. Once a bustling port for the region's farming and gold rushes, today it's a peaceful stopover with a quirky twist — its historic precinct is home to a colony of little blue penguins. The town's limestone buildings glow golden in the afternoon light, and the scent of salt and fish and chips hangs in the air. It's a place where you can wander past grand old banks turned into galleries, then watch the sun set over the sea with a colony of seabirds returning to their nests.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors find one full day and one night in Omaru ideal. Arrive in the afternoon to explore the historic precinct and grab a coffee from one of the artisan roasters. Stay for the evening penguin viewing (book ahead in peak season). The next morning, visit the Steampunk HQ and Bushy Beach before heading north or south. If you have a second day, add a trip to the Moeraki Boulders and nearby Katiki Point Lighthouse for more wildlife.
