Ohakune, a lively alpine town at the southern edge of Tongariro National Park, is your gateway to year-round adventure. Known as the carrot capital of New Zealand, this friendly hub buzzes with skiers in winter and hikers in summer, all drawn by the dramatic volcanic landscape. The main street is dotted with cafes, gear shops, and a welcoming pub—perfect for refueling after a day on the slopes or trails.
Highlights & What to See
- Tongariro Alpine Crossing – One of New Zealand's greatest day hikes, traversing volcanic craters, emerald lakes, and alpine meadows. Start early from Ohakune.
- Turoa Ski Area – On the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, offering excellent skiing and snowboarding with a long season (June–October).
- Ohakune Old Coach Road – A scenic cycling and walking trail through historic viaducts and native bush, part of the Mountains to Sea cycle trail.
- Mangawhero River Walk – A gentle stroll along the river, with views of Mount Ruapehu and the chance to spot native birds.
- Ohakune Mountain Road – A stunning drive to Turoa, with viewpoints over the national park and the Rangitikei River valley.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least two to three days to experience Ohakune's highlights. One day for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (or a shorter walk), one day for Turoa skiing or mountain biking, and a half-day for the Old Coach Road. If you're short on time, a single overnight can cover the main sights, but a longer stay lets you soak up the alpine atmosphere.
